The problem is the phrase “in the fields” SPECIFICALLY. “The fields”=slavery. Every Black person knows this. They’re loaded words. “[Black character] loves working on his farm” is a totally different story than “[Black character] tills the fields.”
This lack of Black perspectives was evident in the show itself. Lonnie and Netossa are Sassy Black Girls. Mara gets white features when she turns into She-Ra. And Bow is great, but his Blackness feels inconsequential in a way the queer rep in this show simply does not.
I learned to love She-Ra despite these things. Ultimately it did me more good than harm. But I’m grown and was able to make a conscious decision, while younger viewers will just absorb what they’re seeing. We have to do better by queer Black kids and stop asking them to choose.
