I reached an interesting conclusion with my therapist yesterday that I want to share. I was talking about my campaign work, and how I sometimes find it depleting, futile and upsetting - the feeling creeps up on me. We talked about the reasons I campaign: my beliefs and values.
We talked about the origins of my beliefs - my experiences of deprivation, poverty, discrimination, injustice, inequality. I am driven by my beliefs and my beliefs are underpinned by these experiences.
Many of these experiences are associated with trauma for me. I may not always think about it when I'm campaigning, but what I'm doing has a psychic connection to my lived experiences of trauma.I realise I need to take more care to be conscious of these links and the impact on me.
I am sharing this because I think that most of us who actively campaign do so because of our beliefs and values, and these may well have a basis in difficult or traumatic experiences. If you are finding yourself depleted by the campaign, do pay attention to that, and take care.
