I have collected some comments I've read from palaeontologists and amateurs regarding the movie Ammonite, and the portrayal of Mary Anning as queer. I am answering them here because I don't want to engage in a nasty debate. (1/too many)
I'll start with a little disclaimer. I'm a bit skeptical that Ammonite might actually just be queerbaiting. You can have the queer cake but don't eat it. I hope I will get proven wrong.
The tl;dr first: I'm going to call this thread "You need proof of queerness but you need not proof of straightness".
First one. "Why don't they make a movie of actual queer palaeontologists/scientists, like Franz Nopsca?"
Let's start with a challenge. Other than Franz Nopsca, name 5 queer palaeontologists from before the 1950s. Or 3. You can use Google.
Now, a lot of the characters whose queerness has been historically confirmed where in the closet or had tragic ends due to their sexuality. When they are made into a big film, sexuality will be downplayed from a storyline to a plot device. Take for example The Imitation Game.
Alan Turing's homosexuality is just a plot device. This was an Oscar baiting movie and his queerness had to be downplayed to appeal to the Conservative audience of the Academy. Even though he is gay, the only meaningful relationship portrayed in that movie is with Joan Clarke.
In Kinsey, same, his relationship with a man is portrayed as a plot device needed to make him a hero. He's portrayed as the passive receiver of the affection by men, making him a more sympathetic character.
Furthermore, Kinsey is a problematic character, and making him a hero in a movie about him avoiding the problematic issues is more damaging for our community in the long run. Because when you find that out, you will be in for a very rough mental ride.
Au contraire, when queerness is at the actual centre of the plot, like in the movie The Hours, it highlights real problems of the queer community, like mental health. This is good to raise awareness that queer people are... People. But it's not for our own enjoyment.
