What I learned from working multiple 9-to-5 positions, and failing - over and over again:
1. The mean workplace is made for the mean person to thrive on, or at least not struggle too much.
If critical components of your personality and/or mindset deviate too much from the mean, you won't thrive - doesn't matter how good you are at what you do.

2. Waking up every day dreading what you're going to do for the next 8 to 10 hours is one of the worst feelings one can have.
I don't wish it on my worst enemy.

3. If you're feeling constantly irritable and pissed off at everyone on a daily basis there's something that needs to be changed.
The problem isn't with everyone, it's with you.

4. Money has no worth if what you do to get it makes you feel consistently miserable.
But you have to experience that in order to get to that realization, or at least I did.

5. Your mind affects your body - a lot.
Persistent stress makes your body break down. If lasts too long you'll start feeling just as if you were sick. This is the body telling you to stop and reassess the situation - don't ignore it and look for solutions.

6. At some point, if you don't adapt at a given workplace, you will think the problem is with the place.
This will make you quit and try new ones, perhaps several times, until you see a pattern emerge and you come to the realization that you don't fit to the mean.

7. The realization that you don't fit is quite tough to swallow - you'll spend some time in denial expecting things to change. This might not happen if obvious alternatives are in sight for you.
For me the alternatives only started appearing after I gave up the need to fit.
