Phil Hogan might have been excellent at his job, but narrative that the public has shot itself in the foot by seeking his resignation is rancid. No-one would've been seeking his resignation if he hadn't made the choices he did.He is the *only* one to blame here for Ireland's loss
This type of deflection, from people of privilege, implying that those of us outside the political circle are sonehow a bit stupid or idealistic for expecting integrity & empathy is what has let corruption flourish in this country for years. Maybe people have just had enough.
Maybe his resignation IS a loss to Ireland. That's very unfortunate if so. Whose fault is it? Phil Hogan's. He, and he alone, is the one who has potentially cost us.
Are we all perfect? No. Do we make "mistakes"? Yes. Do we make choices that aren't necessarily the right or decent or even lawful ones? Absolutely.

Do most of us get away with deflecting the blame, or have other people in power deflecting it on our behalf? No. No, we do not.
