Value Addition in Agriculture.
Let's simplify it for farmers.
It basically means changing your raw farm produce into a processed product eg grinding chilli or turning a byproduct into something useful eg packaging farm manure for sale or using farm wastes to produce biogas.
Value addition can be as simple as attractively packaging your produce in branded packs to appeal to buyers. This is where marketing comes in handy.
Given the risks in handling harvests, value addition can reduce post harvest losses and cut a competitive edge for farmers.
We need to push our farmers not just to farming but encourage them how to create value for their farm produce.
This also ensures they are not left at the mercy of brokers.
Value addition is simple and should not be made to appear complex.
Let farmers think beyond harvesting.
Also, look at other peripheral industries that depend on what you farm far from mere human consumption. For instance, animal feeds is a huge industry but many farmers don't think of converting their produce into animal feeds, which sells at a premium. You also get to use wastes.
I'm for the idea of smallholder farmers pooling together to form food and wastes processing plants.
You don't need the huge expensive machinery to process. Eg a simple juicer of $80 can help you start processing juice from your orchard that you can pack n brand then distribute.
Instead of selling live chickens, take orders, slaughter n package parts in kgs. The wastes can be processed and sold for dog meal etc. For maize, mill and pack maize flour.
Be focused and have a clear plan on the end game, Value Addition will be very interesting and possible.
It is important to focus on one produce for value addition. This should also help you in looking at the process and produce holistically.
Production leads to byproducts. Think of how you will use these byproducts to add an extra line to your production.
Once ready, remember marketing your value added product will be key in keeping you afloat in the market.
Most agripreneurs fail at this stage.
Moving products in the market will entail an aggressive plan on how to reach your customers, enticing and convincing them to buy.
