Latest release of apps data from DfE shows decrease in starts of 47.2% between 23March-31July compared to same period last year.

Last month& #39;s data showed 52% drop from end of March to end of June, so slight improvement in July? Still a huge fall though! https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/apprenticeships-and-traineeships-august-2020">https://www.gov.uk/governmen...
As with previous releases, the fall has been strongest for young people, with starts down 68% for under 19s.

Yet more evidence that we face a wave of youth unemployment if more isn& #39;t done.
Particularly striking that the fall for higher apps (level 4+) was only 5% (16,850 vs 17,660), compared to 63% for intermediate apps (level 2).

Really worrying that the bottom rung of @halfon4harlowMP& #39;s & #39;ladder of opportunity& #39; has been decimated.
Some good news though. Employer demand for apprentices looks like it picked up in July (but still 22% down on July 2019). So hopefully we& #39;ll see a moderate rebound in August starts.
And encouraging to see that this rebound in employer demand includes lower level apprentices too. Hopefully this continues as the economy gradually opens up further.
Bear with me on this complex looking chart.

Suggests covid-19 may be exacerbating the trend of apps moving away from young people and towards adults (25+) since introduction of the Levy.

Lots of variation (young people tend to start in Sept) so 12 month moving averages used.
And here by level.

Signs that covid-19 is speeding the shift from lower levels to higher levels.

Lower level apprenticeships can be a key first step into skilled employment.

More important than ever that the government steps in to boost these vital training opportunities.
Looking at the subject sector (tier 2) of apprenticeship doesn& #39;t throw up many surprises, but still shocking to see travel and tourism apprenticeships virtually completely disappear...

Top 10 biggest falls (min 100 starts Apr-Jun 2019):
Apps for under19s were falling pre-covid too. Is post-outbreak fall different?

This chart suggests largely the same sectors driving both declines, but health, retail and eng/manf sectors are playing a bigger role post-outbreak.

Business admin the key driver of both.

Thoughts?
The share of under 19s is far lower in levy funded apprenticeships. Big employers don& #39;t want to take on young apprentices?
