I have been inspired by several tweets to create my own statement for students about learning in a pandemic, and digital classrooms. I have collated some statements I have found useful in this thread, but please share others. @AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #academicchatter
I really enjoyed this one from @ProfChrisMJones about “how to be okay” this was my prompt to start my own statement for students. https://twitter.com/profchrismjones/status/1282036533562834944
This is a short and sweet disclaimer at the top of the syllabus from @chsabatier. I think it is essential to tell students that although class is important, their physical and mental health is important too, and we are here to support them. https://twitter.com/chsabatier/status/1278171627776172033
Sonya Huber’s shadow syllabus. I absolutely loved some of these points about learning, classroom dynamics. The honesty of it all. Thanks for sharing @jumpcutjen https://twitter.com/jumpcutjen/status/1288549100850479105
This one isn’t a classroom example, but shared from business from @LiamRedden1 But I definitely borrowed aspects of this for my own statement, we need to show compassion for students situations. https://twitter.com/liamredden1/status/1290243080986140674
“Listen, y’all, we are living with a pandemic” - perfect start from @jamielevdan We can’t ignore the situation we are in, so just acknowledge it! Students don’t want to be lied to that everything is fine, they know that you know everything is difficult right now. Be honest! https://twitter.com/jamielevdan/status/1291101378157391872
This is one of my favourites. Thank you @andrewheiss! Acknowledging that: nothing is really okay, the difficult situation, how we can help if students speak to us, and if we can’t help we generally know someone who can. https://twitter.com/andrewheiss/status/1293909055795105792
I have seen students share rules that they cannot eat or drink on camera, and they must be alone, or in a quiet place. That’s not helpful advice! But @megpillow rules for a safe and digital classroom are great. “Eat if you’re hungry and drink if you’re thirsty” https://twitter.com/megpillow/status/1297905320723984385
And finally this statement from @MrJoeMilliano - which prompted me to include a call for cat pictures in my statement. https://twitter.com/mrjoemilliano/status/1295409521821659137
I hope other people might find these helpful. I really did. I think it is difficult enough living, working, and studying through a pandemic. Let’s be nice to each other. And as @megpillow put - ‘that’s the only way we can get through hard things - together’
