Controversial opinion. We produce resources (INSET included) to improve effectiveness of teaching, but unless time is set aside for departments to discuss, debate, collaborate and strategically plan, they often get cast aside to gather dust, or never/rarely reflected upon.
So important to include modelling at every stage, and this is where expert coaching of individuals to support and challenge their development, is critical. Again, time is hugely important, along with training of coaches.
If I go back a few years, I would lead sessions and then expect to see transformed practice in classrooms, through some form of osmosis. Assuming something is understood and will therefore happen, is one of the biggest mistakes I have made when leading CPD and change in the past.
Great reflection on this by @johntomsett in âPutting Staff Firstâ, where he talks about buying all staff an educational book and handing out on an INSET day, without any real strategy, other than staff will read the book and improve. His point - how many even opened the book?
