So obviously what the NBA players are doing is a strike, but they can't strike under the terms of their CBA. So I thought calling it a boycott was their way of skirting that with a little wink. But...
Now a lot of people Online are saying we *should* call it a strike both because it's more accurate and, I think, normalize striking/let people see the power in it. Which is good! But!
I think there's something to be said for calling it a boycott if that's what the players are calling it. BUT I don't know that they are! I can't find a statement from the Bucks or others that calls it by name - it's just that they can't play given the ongoing injustice.
So for what it's worth, I think newspapers should call it a "strike" because that's what it is in practice - it's withholding labor, not dollars. Buuut I don't really mind the fiction of calling this wildcat a "boycott" if we all get what's going on.
Anyway I also don't want to ignore the WNBA and MLB players striking as well, but I don't know what's in their CBA about strikes so I left them out of this thread about semantics. The end
