Burger king in their recent marketing stunt, turned donations into advertisement!
The campaign-created by Ogilby owned agency David Madrid- ran in the early August and lasted only a few hours on Twitch, world's leading live streaming platform for gamers
The video, which has more than a million views now, has no paid media behind it! The agency, however, exploited Twitch's donation feature to promote BK's $5 value meal without paying anything meaningful for its advertising. Infact, the whole execution was carried out by a bot!!!
The issues stems from a feature that allows Twitch viewers to have a typed message read out loud by a computer whenever they donate money to a streamer. In this case, the agency targeted popular streamers and used a bot to donate $5 to have its message read out loud.
Streamers eventually caught wind of the marketing stunt and called out both BK and Ogilvy for placing such a small value ($5) for using their content to sell burgers. Their fans quickly followed suit. Some streamers even banned Burger King from their channels.
The agency’s misstep is significant, as advertisers have been drawn to Twitch given its ridiculous growth since social distancing guidelines were put in place. BK’s marketing stunt, however, should serve as a warning of what not to do when advertising on the platform.
The campaign not only faced backlash from the streamers but the whole gaming community on Twitch. Even Sarah Iooss, head of sales for the Americas at Twitch, echoed a similar sentiment when she said that running ads on Twitch but without being on the platform, doesnt work at all!
What do you guys think? Was BK's recent campaign a marketing genius or an epic fail? Let me know by replying to this thread!
