I don’t disagree with ANY of this. But the underlying assumption that Fr. Martin makes is that left-leaning policy positions on each of these issues lead to better outcomes for these groups of people. That’s debatable. And by that, I don’t mean “dubious.” I mean, “debatable.” https://twitter.com/jamesmartinsj/status/1298798299248562176
In other words, we can hash it out in the realm of ideas about whose policies BEST support the poor, the sick, the immigrant, etc. But here’s why abortion is absolute and 100% non-negotiable...the unborn are the ONLY group of people you can intentionally kill without penalty
No candidate for any office anywhere, that I’m aware of, is suggesting it should be legal to kill an immigrant, either documented or undocumented. No candidate is suggesting it should be legal to kill black people. No candidate is suggesting that black lives DON’T matter.
What about capital punishment? First of all, I’m strongly opposed to capital punishment. Second, According to CNN, as of July 2020, 1,516 people have been executed in the US since 1976. I believe that’s now up to 1,522 or 1,523.
On average, that’s how many children are killed by abortion in this country in approximately 13 hours, every day, since 1973. The two issues are not remotely comparable and this is merely a deflection tactic.
Here’s the reality...if a candidate for public office, any candidate, for any office, said that it should be legal to kill some segment of society (black people, immigrants, LGBTQ, women, etc.) such a candidate would rightly be run off the political stage.
But it’s in vogue to advocate the legal killing of the unborn. And we justify it on all sorts of grounds. But it all boils down to one thing...we fail to see the humanity of the unborn.
“But I’d never have an abortion! I just wouldn’t impose that on others!” Yeah, I’d never kill a black person, and I WOULD impose that on you. Because you ought not kill black people either.
I’m not a one issue voter. I look at all sorts of things when deciding for whom to vote. But there IS one issue that if you get it wrong, I won’t even consider voting for you. If you think it should be a legally protected right to kill ANYONE (but in this case the unborn)...
...you are unfit for public office and unworthy of receiving my vote. Period.
