During the 3rd night of protests in Kenosha, shootings left two people dead and another injured. Later, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse was arrested and faces a charge of first-degree intentional homicide. We break down the key moments of the night. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/27/us/kyle-rittenhouse-kenosha-shooting-video.html
Throughout the hours before the first shooting, Rittenhouse appears in several online videos. Most of his appearances are near a car dealership at 59th St and Sheridan Rd that he claims to be protecting. Vehicles at the dealership’s parking lot were burned a day before.
He carries a military-style semi-automatic rifle the whole time. He also says that he has a medical kit to provide medical assistance.

15 minutes before the first shooting, police drive past the car dealership and offer him and other armed civilians water and appreciation.
It is unclear when and why Rittenhouse leaves this car dealership. Six minutes before the first shooting, he is seen at a gas station one block south. As he tries to get back to the car dealership, the police block him. He has to turn around.
Then, in the moments leading to the first shooting, he is seen at another car dealership three blocks further south where vehicles are being damaged. He is chased by several people. An unknown gunman fires the first shot into the air. We see the weapon’s muzzle flash in footage.
Rittenhouse turns toward the sound of the gunfire as another pursuer lunges toward him. He then fires four times, appearing to hit the man in the head. There are three more shots heard but we haven’t yet been able to identify who fired them.
Rittenhouse seems to make a call after the first shooting then flees from the scene. People start to chase him. He trips and falls to the ground and fires four shots as three people rush him. One person is shot in the chest, while another man with a handgun is hit in the arm.
Rittenhouse’s social media profiles proclaim support for pro-police causes, and suggest a strong affinity for guns and President Trump. The @nytimes Visual Investigations team will keep monitoring and investigating the event. If you have any information, please share with us.
