I keep seeing “so what is boycotting tonight accomplishing,” which ignores the real impact protests have and have had in this country for decades. We’re all talking about this today. That’s one thing. But also, it’s not up to athletes, particularly Black athletes, to solve racism
It’s on all of us. And it’s a hard problem to solve. But trying to figure out what to do about on a large scale it is far more admirable and worthwhile than refusing to do anything because it’s “too big” an issue.
Wealth and fame do not invalidate someone’s experience with racism. It doesn’t make a Black athlete less worried about the way his or her own children or family members will be treated. And that’s a problem. Let’s listen.
You fell in love with sports in part because of the people playing them. And because of the feeling that a team represents a bigger community. It’s a shared love. If people in your community are hurting, that matters.
