During my first six months of living in upstate New York, I had a 90-minute commute to work. The school I taught at helped me arrange a car pool where I could pick up two of my students about 45 minutes into my drive.

So...
...here I was with an empty nest for the first time, and I got to enjoy 45minutes before school and 45minutes after school talking to this freshman boy and sophomore girl about all the stuff that gets talked about in car rides to and from school.

And...
The girl in my carpool was incredibly smart. She even recited 263 digits of pi from memory on Pi Day.

I was sad when I moved away at the end of the school year.

But...
She looked me up on Facebook, and we friended each other. I got to see her go to RPI on a full academic scholarship. Then be angry mom when I found out her college boyfriend got her pregnant during her junior year, and she quit school before finishing.

She got married.

And...
They post all the perfect, happy family pics. I couldn’t stay mad long after seeing her face glow looking at her son.

After a few years, she went back to finish her degree.

During her senior year she messaged me often to ask questions about teaching.

Because...
She told me she had wanted to become a teacher ever since being in my geometry class https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Funkelndes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Funkelndes Herz">. So during her last year of school, she had to have her focus on student teaching and writing her thesis.

After all of that...
She graduated a few months ago. Today, she posted that she was hired as the chemistry teacher at a high school near her. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😊" title="LĂ€chelndes Gesicht mit lĂ€chelnden Augen" aria-label="Emoji: LĂ€chelndes Gesicht mit lĂ€chelnden Augen">

I’m so happy for her. And to think I said or did something to inspire her to do this is an bonk
Lol. I was falling asleep while typing the last two bits of this thread and don’t remember hitting the tweet button. “...an bonk” was likely meant to be “...an honor.”
