misinterpretation of tooru oikawa — a thread
here’s a list of tw / tws and topics to be AWARE of before reading

tw //
sexualizing , bullying , toxic fandoms , mistreating women / playing with feelings , violence / attacking / hitting , problematic headcanons , inferiority complex , online hate
before I get started with this thread, there will probably be spoilers from the anime & manga, so if you don’t want something spoiled for you please read this another time bc I don’t wanna spoil things for you. I’ve been holding back on this for awhile okay I’ll shut up & start.
Also, you’re allowed to dislike characters. If you dislike oikawa go ahead. The only thing I’m doing here is explaining how some of the reasons either make zero sense or are misinterpreted in my opinion?? Idk if that makes sense I probably worded this wrong
1) Lets start off with “Oikawa’s cocky / Oikawa is full of himself.” This is just untrue. There’s a difference between being confident in your skills and your teammates / team vs being a cocky jerk. Oikawa isn’t even full of himself either??? He literally feels inferior +
+ to kageyama and ushijima too? It just doesn’t make sense based on the foundation of his character for someone to go “he’s a cocky no good piece of shit.” Also many other characters are super confident in their team and are very competitive, just like oikawa, yet I don’t hear +
+ anyone calling them cocky or arrogant. People really want a reason to hate oikawa and it’s fucking embarrassing keep that shit to yourself. Don’t watch a sports anime if you’re upset about characters being competitive? Like what did you expect? It comes with playing a sport.
also in ch 401 or 402 (not exactly sure) oikawa says the following below. my friend in the screenshot next to it basically explains his development (the idea of healthy sportsmanship, which is different from how used to feel ab his rivals in high school & considers them family)
2) I also hate how some people slap the “player/fuckboy” label on oikawa. like if you go on Wattpad ALL YOU SEE ARE FANFICS WHERE HES A PLAYER AND PLAYS WITH YOUR FEELINGS??? AND HES LITERALLY NOT LIKE THAT COME ON WHAT EVEN— +
+ also unrelated to the thread but I’ve had my feelings played with several times and it hurts when people slap that kind of thing onto ur favorite/comfort character?? I’m sure other people are in a similar situation to mine and if u are I’m so sorry. anyways back to the thread +
+ Oikawa and his girlfriend didn’t break up bc he played with her feelings. She dumped him bc he was so involved with volleyball and didn’t have time to really date anyone. I think it was implied in the show?? Oikawa is also super respectful to women so why would he do that? +
+ we all know how some of his his fangirls can be, yet he is still kind to them and thanks them for their gifts etc. he doesn’t have to do any of this. Some players don’t even ACKNOWLEDGE their fanbase. Oikawa even has an official fanclub too he really loves all of his fans. +
+ in conclusion, oikawa loves all of his fans and would never disrespect women, or anyone for that matter. Stop trying to paint him out to look like a bad person? What do you gain from this?
3) I know several people dislike oikawa for him almost hitting kageyama in middle school (Thankfully iwaizumi was there). (Kageyama: ms first year, Oikawa: ms third year) I honestly understand why people might dislike him for this but I also know that +
+ oikawa truly felt terrible about this later. In short, oikawa experienced a moment of weakness / freaked out, resulting in him attempting to lash out at kageyama (until iwa stopped him). Before attempting to hit him, he said something around the words of “get away from me” +
+ and he even thought he saw kageyama’s eyes glow red?? During this scene oikawa was clearly not in the right state of mind and people are hating him for making a mistake that he truly feels bad for. Oikawa also changes as an individual (according to his middle school coaches) +
I’m gonna put some videos and photos below to show you that oikawa does apologize. This apology might not be that complex but please note that he does genuinely feel bad. Here’s the manga panel of the scene. I’ll put videos below after that
+ oikawa just looks genuinely terrified of himself too? I don’t think oikawa expected himself to lash out at an underclassman.

(The video of the manga panel I just showed above)
+ here’s the video of the coaches (after kags & oikawa incident) talking abt oikawas development. Obviously he still isn’t perfect in ms, but complete development doesn’t happen overnight? by the end of the manga (ch 401/2) i truly think he has changed as an Individual +
+ again, I’m not trying to excuse what he did. what I am trying to say is that he has grown and changed as an individual. He truly feels bad about what he did (the minute he did it too). I would also like to add that I have seen other haikyuu characters be violent, but I never +
+ see anyone complain about that??? this is not me hating on other characters bc I don’t hate any of the characters on that show. Some people pick and choose who to hate. Remember when kageyama threw hinata on the floor in season 2 when trying to practice the new quick attack? +
+ again, kags is one of my favorite characters too, but you guys can’t pick and choose who to call out for a certain thing. I’m absolutely sure kageyama also felt terrible for throwing hinata on the ground as well, so I’m not trying to stir shit saying “omg they hate each other”+
+ I love kageyama he’s a great character. Anyways while I’m talking about him, I almost disliked him bc of a FEW kageyama stans (who also hate oikawa) basically hating oikawa based on a misinterpreted scene. I don’t know if someone has said this already but I’ll say it below +
YOU CAN LIKE BOTH OIKAWA AND KAGEYAMA! I DO!!!! THANK YOU!!

i wish i understood this sooner bc i got the impression that you “weren’t allowed to” and that’s so unfair to people who love both characters.
+ haikyuu is considered a shounen series, meaning there is a lot of character development in store for the characters, especially oikawa and kageyama, so pls realize that they both grow and change as individuals and become better people. okay I’ll go to the next topic now +
4) it is likely that oikawa may have an inferiority complex, though i have asked around and many of us have no idea if this is 100% canon. i have seen people insulting oikawa for this, which is so unbelievably fucked up. this is not something +
+ you can just control. I’ve seen tweets calling him annoying for having symptoms of an inferiority complex and honestly just stop? He literally breathed some of you really just want to hate him for living what the fuck. I’m sick of people trying to come up with ways to hate +
+ him... like is this a fucking game to you? An oikawa anti on Instagram once told me to “listen up” because I liked him? Like huh. Like are EXTREME (note how I didn’t say all) oikawa antis this bored?? Let people like oikawa how does this affect you in any way, shape, or form?
tw cheating

5) also, please don’t put problematic headcanons on oikawa.. or um.. literally anyone? I’m sick of seeing “which hq character would probably cheat? Oh oikawa lol!” I Genuinely DONT understand why people want to hate him so much I’m genuinely confused +
+ oh and also the “is oikawa (or any hs student for that matter) a top or a bottom” tweets need to stop right now. if you’re talking about him in high school, you are literally sexualizing a high school student I’m disgusted.
6) unrelated to hating oikawa but it’s kind of linked. Don’t hate on artists for making harmless oikawa art? My friend made art of oikawa with blonde hair & dark hair and they’ve received so much hate and backlash??? Here’s where the oikawa hate sort of comes in +
+ I know some people are joking bc hello they have an oikawa @ or Dn, but I see people genuinely saying these nasty things abt oikawa or things abt the artist themselves??? oikawa antis literally sit down I’m tired of it. If you don’t like him, good for you. +
+ DONT lash out at the artist for liking a character and being creative. If you don’t like how the artist changed the color of his hair or whatever, just don’t comment? Artists on here work so hard. I’m not an artist myself so I’ll never know how hard this is +
+ but what I do know is that it’s disrespectful to hate on someone’s artwork in a disrespectful manner. There’s a difference between constructive criticism and just being malicious on purpose cut it out.
okay that’s all I’m just gonna put something personal below and then I’m done
tw transphobia

I apologize for the really long thread. oikawa has done so much for me / helped me get through so much pain, whether it’s heartbreak, losing a friend, feeling like a failure, or the transphobia i face on a daily basis. please think about what you’re tweeting+
+ before you tweet because you could be upsetting someone who thinks about a certain character as their comfort character!! like i said if you dislike oikawa that’s okay i won’t hate anyone for it. What I do hate is the unjustified hate he receives abt literally everything. +
+ I also sometimes feel like people hate oikawa just to say they do / almost like they’re parading it around like its some sort of achievement? Idk maybe it’s just me.
Okay that’s all! I hope everyone is having a fantastic day today!!! I love you all! You’re all valid and amazing :D
Tw anxiety

I’m literally shaking uncontrollably as I post this bc I’m terrified of being attacked by oikawa antis but I’m so sick of how people treat him (as one of my mutuals has said) “like a rag.” This needs to stop
OIKAWA LOVES YOU ALL!!!
