One problem I have with this "it& #39;s either government by the people *or* enlightened experts" dichotomy, especially in the context in this speech, is that the founders *were* experts. Insanely knowledgeable polymaths practically to a person.
Republicans make a good argument against a lot of the non-education that students receive today. And we see the lack of basic knowledge you can get away with and still be considered & #39;highly educated& #39;--just look at "seasonal fluctuations are Hitler" tweets about the Rose Garden.
But that argument is incompatible with the argument that our schools are failing *because* they& #39;re not emulating the educational focuses that the founders got right. Lotta fake & #39;experts& #39; out there but when talking of the founders--they aren& #39;t among them.
We conservatives should talk about expertise in that context. My 5yo tonight at dinner recounted the Burr-Hamilton duel because he read it in a book on his own and remembered it. 6yo asked to listen to Vivaldi today. I hope to raise self-governing experts.
