rant: @starwars needs to stop using tatooine as fanservice because its going to break core parts of the lore

a poorly written thread by aly ( @skywalkermyth)
My two favourite characters are luke and anakin skywalker. They mean the world to me and their story is something that is extremely important and dear to me. Since these two characters are at the core of the star wars franchise, star wars uses their homeworld (tatooine)-
-like a crutch. This is fundamentally BAD for the Star Wars franchise. Tatooine is first and foremost the galaxy’s garbage dump. IT’S A SHITHOLE. It’s a wretched hive of scum and villany.
It’s a place where slavery is legal, and where farmers starve, and get beaten if they are unable to cough up Jabba’s impossible water taxes, which only get raised during droughts, leaving them with very, very little to survive off-
Thus, it’s a place covered in some of the worst poverty in the galaxy. This has been true since we were first introduced to the franchise in 1977, and fundamentally, it’s a place where Anakin and Luke (and Leia, Han, Shmi, and many others) were all very, very miserable.
With both Anakin and Luke's entwined journeys echoing how they were both determined to get off the rock and search of better lives. Yet, as you can see it’s a place that Star Wars can’t leave alone. (see screenshot)
This is problematic because for somewhere that is the furthest from the bright centre of the universe, it's a place where Star Wars just CANNOT stop returning to.
It’s supposed to be a shithole, it is a shithole, full of poverty and crime and corruption, and yet, suddenly, Star Wars is making it seem like it’s the centre of business.
They really have to stop doing this because, as you can see, it’s just going to break the lore and make it seem exciting and desirable when that’s the very last thing it’s ever supposed to be. It's going to really do a disservice to the stories of Luke and Anakin Skywalker.
Now, I don't know if I've explained myself properly, but I hope you can start to see where I'm coming from at least. Star Wars needs to stop using Tatooine. There are plenty of other planets they can use, but they need to preserve the identity of Tatooine-
-as a place, to borrow an phrase from a Legends book (see below) full of "broken buildings, broken people." Full of poverty, and strife, and a place where only the desperate and exploited live because they *have to*, not because they *want to*.
