Today we celebrate #WomensEqualityDay commemorating the 100th year anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, which allowed some women the rights to vote. As a Puerto Rican woman, commemorating this day feels bittersweet.
We honor the struggle, grit and labor of the thousands of women who fought for the right of female suffrage. Today marks a very important victory, but its one that is still disconnected from Puerto Rican women, in a huge way.
So-called universal suffrage wasnt achieved in Puerto Rico until 1935. It was achieved through the hard work of Puerto Rican women. But I would argue that those who still live in the island have not achieved full suffrage, no matter our gender
We cant elect voting representation to congress, or vote for President. But still, millions of Puerto Rican women who live in the mainland can. So I call upon them to vote this November. Vote like *our* lives depend on it, because it does.
