During the new faculty orientation for @UMich I legitimately cried watching an amazing video put together by @UMich_CRLT to highlight the many ways that marginalization can impact faculty & students. And reminding faculty of their responsibilities to ALL students.

A short 🧵1/n
2/n I realized I've been at primarily white institutions (re demographic representation) throughout graduate training, internship, and postdoc. And I've been fortunate that they've all been committed largely to inclusion and actively working to promote it.
3/n However, they've all fallen short im various ways (understandably so maybe). There's always been, for me, a feeling of responsibility to be vocal to help improve things given my own relative privilege (see: male, cisgender, able bodied, and white-passing).
4/n Seeing the depictions of marginalization of students based on SES, sexual orientation, race I saw myself. It's the first time I've seen anything that honest or well-crafted and comprehensive.

A reminder: Marginalized students go on to become marginalized faculty.
5/n I've never before seen it depicted SO well.

My tears reflected quiet and reserved optimism that perhaps I'm entering a place where they ABSOLUTELY get it. Where it might feel less like being a rabble rouser and more normative.
6/n So I was touched. I felt seen. And wanted to publicly share that, at least for this faculty member, this was emotionally powerful.

I'm optimistic and still wary. But certainly optimistic.
N/N Also just over here in my corner trying to normalize/humanize academics, men, scientists experiencing emotions and feeling vulnerable.

And finding any excuse to litter yals' timelines with GIFs is my brand.
P.S.

If the video is ever available to be shared I will certainly do so.

Perhaps it's also the emotions of moving from trainee to faculty, and seeing the importance placed on faculty preparedness to support diverse trainees at UM that got me up in my feels.
