After watching The Half Of It for the 5th time I just wanted to come on here and just talk abt how amazing this film is like @netflix really did us a solid adding this film to their platform specifically so that it can reach the widest audience possible
1. The concepts and symmetry - the idea of symmetry was seen throughout the film to suggest this two halves of a whole soulmates idea and I JUST LOVED IT the scene with Ellie and Aster in the hot spring with the reflections of when the stood on the road on different paths
2. The importance of representation, specifically Asian LGBTQ+ women that are awkward and don’t really know what’s happening and the scene abt Ellie talking abt how lonely it can be to not believe in anything HITS DIFFERENT for me I relate so SO much
3. The significance of literature and art in the plot - no words but SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL my favourite scene is when Ellie and Aster graffiti that wall together and the metaphor for the “bold strokes” in life is something I will remember forever
4. The idea of friend soulmates and a completely platonic relationship of two people of opposite genders- I think films forget thy some of the most powerful meaningful life changing relationships are friendships that are entirely unromantic and this film captures that perfectly
5. Cinematography and detail in films- this film captures the essence of what it means to be perfect the use of shot types when Ellie is on her bike to reflect her perspective )seems more uphill when she’s feeling sad or out of her depth compared to after she kisses Aster)
6.The way love is portrayed- this film never gives a strict or rigid definition but it’s fluid it changes from character to character (Paul says its the effort v Ellie says it’s the boldness) but as the story develops their definitions or thoughts abt love intertwine and connect
7. The opening sequence of animation deserves appreciation of its own cos it was so fucking cute I as in love from the first second of the first time I watched the film and how this theory of two halves of a whole was introduced
8. The quotations scattered throughout the film - why I loved the quotes so much is because it felt collaborative or felt like as the audience I was being shows these little snippets of history and art and how they felt that now and this small insight into their minds
9. The sound and the music was just beautiful it perfectly fit the indie raw stripped back vibe the movie was projecting while leaning into the teen coming of age element of the story
One thing I found really clever was in the beginning when The Half of It title was on the screen but you could only see the top half i dont know it just really added to the fact that this film was well thought out
10. The use of international cinema- now fact that Ellie and Paul were watching Ek Villain and recreated the scene at the end and I’m Indian but I’m also someone that loves content of all languages is like cinema is all abt show don’t tell and that doesn’t hv a language
I’m going to end this thread and stfu now but I love this film so so SO MUCH it’s literally my comfort film I have ugly cried every time I’ve watched it and it’s been like 8 times so go watch #thehalfofit or die🥰
