Yesterday I spoke with an almost 60-year-old woman who has not received an unemployment check in over a month after she received holiday pay for the 4th of July from her former employer. She lives with a sister who is unable to work, and fears losing everything.
Halfway through our conversation I realized she lives in Lake Charles, LA, directly in the path of Hurricane Laura. When I asked her about evacuating she said something I haven’t been able to shake.
“I have $10 to get where I need to go.”
“I have $10 to get where I need to go.”
She assured me she’d be ok and we agreed I’d call her again tomorrow to check in, but man that was a gut punch.
