Soccer Saturday needed refreshing to be honest. It got to a point where it was very by the lads for the lads and a lot of the professionalism was lost. It’s a news broadcasting service at the end of the day and the lack of diversity was always concerning.
Don’t get me wrong I’ve always enjoyed the chemistry and banter and even the club bias had among the ‘pundits’ on SS, but there’s no reason why that banter can’t be had with a more diverse and professional line up.
Like the gag of people like Kammy and Merse not pronouncing players’ names right. It’s just disrespectful when you’re a news broadcasting service. The bare minimum if you’re reporting on a specific football match is that you can pronounce all the players’ names.
And with the majority of the line up until fairly recently being straight white middle aged men - you need to be giving opportunities to the marginalised groups. I know many will moan about it ‘ticking boxes, PC brigade’ and all that but representation matters for many of us.
With a diverse cast a few years from now we won’t have the argument that people are there to tick a box because by giving people opportunities it’ll encourage those like them that they too can be/are good enough and will get the chances they’re deserving of going forward.
Who’s to say the chemistry of the panel - whatever it may be going forward - is going to suffer as a result of a few of them going? I’m not asking for or expecting drastic change. A few little tweaks is all that is necessary.
