This is a great first step!
Next, tell folks exactly what you are looking for:
- what questions are you ruminating on?
- what skills are you trying to sharpen?
- what circumstances (your job, your editor, your newsroom) are you trying to change? https://twitter.com/alexisjreports/status/1298378248917835777

Mentorship works best when it is driven by the mentee. Which can be really tough if you are a mentee facing imposter syndrome!
But be explicit in what kind of help you need and keep asking til you get the support you're looking for.

Easy ways to invite someone to commit an act of mentoring with you:
- could you help me select my clips for an upcoming application?
- would you review my resume and give me some feedback?
- can you help me prepare for an interview by running mock Qs?

For me, my mentors often act as surrogate parents. Just someone with more life experience than I have had who can offer an Adult Perspective.
They've helped me navigate toxic bosses, negotiate raises, leverage outside offers, etc.
Mostly they've helped shape my grown self.

Another thing: mentorship is something that grows over time. It's very unlikely that you will meet a new person at a conference and that person will instantly become your mentor.
