It’s “Research for a Healthier Environment” month! Here’s a shout out to a cool #research tool, EPA’s glider Nokomis, an autonomous underwater vehicle, shown here last fall aboard the R/V #LakeGuardian. https://www.epa.gov/great-lakes-monitoring/lake-guardian #EPAat50 @EPAresearch
Last fall, Nokomis spent 22 days cruising the central basin of Lake Erie assessing low dissolved oxygen levels (hypoxia) as part of a larger project and sampling late-summer harmful algal blooms. https://www.epa.gov/great-lakes-monitoring/cooperative-science-and-monitoring-initiative-csmi #research #EPAat50
Since 2014, EPA gliders have been deployed in the #GreatLakes for 314 days, completed over 60,000 water column profiles and traveled approximately 4,500 miles. Gliders are “flown” with coding and sensors to keep them safe and on course. #EPAat50 #research
