in the history of the united kingdom, the victorian era happened on 20 june 1837 to 22 january 1901 and the era was named after the queen victoria. when queen victoria died, the victorian era ended on that very day she died.
during the victorian era, many people were dying on a daily basis due to many reasons from diseases, air pollution, poor health etc. unfortunately, there wasn’t enough space for that amount of dead bodies, leading to have 20+ coffins in one grave.
have you seen cages being placed over the graves sometimes ? that’s because in the 19th century, people believed that deceased people can come back as a zombie or a vampire. people who can’t afford to buy cages, buried their beloved ones with their face down
victorian cemeteries were full of bones and bodies. it was caused by grave diggers who were digging new graves and they were throwing the bones and parts of bodies everywhere due to the lack of space
when a grave digger found some part of the coffin, they usually sold it as a fuel. it was also said that grave diggers played “bowling” in the cemeteries with bones.
taking photos with the deceased bodies as if they were alive was a very big thing during the victorian era. it was full of death and paranormal things and people are obsessed with the theme of death
hiring professional ‘mourners’ was a serious thing in the 19th century because funerals back then were too complicated
