Something I've been meaning to talk about for a while is the huge contrast between Lilith's “mentorship” of Amity and Eda's mentorship of Luz, because there's some interesting stuff there to pick apart.

First, there's the way Lilith talks about Amity in “Convention.” Unlike how Eda quickly comes to care for Luz and ends up treating her like a surrogate daughter more or less, Lilith seems to only care about Amity's potential power and sees her as little more than a tool.

(2/10)
She never refers to Amity as anything more than “[her] protĂ©gĂ©â€ and makes a big spectacle of introducing her like she wants to show her off. It's clear Lilith primarily values Amity's magic rather than her personhood and is mostly using Amity to make herself look good.

(3/10)
Further proof of this is Lilith making Amity cheat without any regard for how that would make Amity feel. It's an interesting parallel that Eda does the same thing but grows beyond it with time, whereas Lilith never shows any guilt over publicly humiliating Amity.

(4/10)
This is also reflected in how Amity doesn't call the Emperor's Coven her dream or her wish, but “[her] future,” showing that it was decided for her. This suggests she's Lilith's student because Lilith and her parents wanted her to be rather than because she wanted to be.

(5/10)
Next, in “Adventures in the Elements” when Amity is learning a new spell and is obviously insecure about her abilities... Lilith is nowhere to be found. You'd think in the dedicated training episode we might actually see Lilith, y'know, training her “protĂ©gĂ©,” but no.

(6/10)
Eda can be reckless and she's not always the best teacher, but she's genuinely trying to help Luz and she actually puts in the time and effort to train her. Meanwhile, Lilith has never even been shown offering Amity guidance or helping her learn in any way.

(7/10)
Now I do think that Lilith has trained Amity off screen, and I do think that Amity has some respect for Lilith as a mentor. It's just worth noting that everything we’ve seen so far shows a total lack of any real bond between them, especially compared to Luz and Eda.

(8/10)
And it's very telling that in the show so far all we've seen is Lilith embarrass Amity for her own benefit, be absent from Amity's training, and generally treat Amity like a pawn, in contrast to Eda's earnest maternal care for Luz and respect for Luz's autonomy.

(9/10)
In conclusion, no wonder Amity told the poster of Lilith to shut up last episode. Based on what we've been shown up until now, Lilith is a pretty shitty teacher.
