If you’re wondering why the white kid who shot & killed multiple protestors could walk calmly to police immediately after without getting apprehended, here he is minutes earlier going up to their armored trucks to get water they offered him & his armed militia crew. https://twitter.com/DrRJKavanagh/status/1298532736790077440
Here he is https://twitter.com/Jen83369248/status/1298582500252549124?s=20
I heard the ring of fire go out last night, just a few blocks from where I’m staying. Cops were further down the street throwing tear gas at protestors. My lips are still tingling from it. Meanwhile this dude brandishing a weapon after KILLING somebody got...nothing.
Blackness makes us move different, in even the smallest ways. As a Black woman out here reporting these events in Kenosha, I know I can’t be out like white reporters can.
I was paranoid about my hotel desk not letting me in after a certain hour or cops shooting at me bc they’d confuse me for a protestor. As much as I want to capture all of the story, I have to deal with a greater risk.
More importantly it makes the BLM protestors move different. All evening, I saw some approach so-called militia to deescalate.

They’re protesting the state on one end of the park and militia literally on the other, still trying to reason
Like this young man up front in the grey shirt, who I spoke to earlier last night. A teenager. The white man in burgundy was an ally, allegedly angry that the militia pointed a gun at him. Witnesses say it was him who a vigilante shot in the head & killed https://twitter.com/zerosum24/status/1298476024007663622?s=20
I wasn’t even planning to cover much of the protests themselves. I came to talk to families and residents about a lot of what underlies all of this—the extreme economic inequality for Black people in Wisconsin, arguably the worst in the country.
But it’s also important to document what’s happening immediately. I see the TV anchors come out in the morning, freshly primped and made up, focusing on burned buildings & broken street lights.

What underlies the anger always gets lost, though many don’t ever intend to find it.
Here’s the #KenoshaShooter, reportedly Kyle Rittenhouse from Illinois, calmly approach the police officers, gun strapped around him. Someone yells that he shot just somebody. The police roll right on past him.
The same mindset that allows people to massacre Native Americans to protect property that is not theirs is the same that would bring a dude from Illinois to Wisconsin to kill people over property he doesn’t own.
Settler-colonialism has no logic. Property is theirs to steal & guard, whatever the cost of human life.
Last thing, the #KenoshaShooter had JUST shot someone else prior to the video being wildly circulated of the 2nd shooting. Don’t let people fool you into thinking it was a random mob. It was self-defense.

They ran after a killer to apprehend him, a job apparently too difficult for cops who have all the armored trucks, tear gas, and concussion bombs for protestors.
