NEW CIVIL SERVICE STATS

Follow @aliceolilly for the main thread ( https://mobile.twitter.com/aliceolilly/status/1298540224641892357) but here's a bit more on grade...

The most junior grades - Admin Officer/Assistant - account for a third of all civil servants in 2020, down from nearly half in 2010
It's the only grade where numbers continue to fall.

There are more people in the more senior grades - the Senior Civil Service, grades 6 and 7, and SEO/HEO - than in 2010.
What does the grade profile look like for each department?

Here's an image with all the labels taken away, if you want to go wild and make some guesses.

(Answers in next tweet.)
As ever, policy-heavy depts - such as DfID, DCMS, Treasury - are much top-heavier (kites, diamonds), with the big delivery depts (DWP with eg job centres, MoJ, HMRC, Home Office) having most of their staff in more junior grades (domes, pyramids).
These 'grade spaceships' show the changes between 2016 and 2020.

One that jumps out is Cabinet Office. That's largely due to them getting responsibility for employing Fast Streamers (typically HEO) a few years back.

DCMS, Treasury are also bulking up at grades 6&7.
Here's the @instituteforgov explainer with more about grade - we'll be updating it with the latest numbers/charts shortly http://bit.ly/2hOoueY
