Yesterday I saw that we have the dubious honour of having a femicide rate 5 times the global average. It is 5 times more dangerous to be a woman in South Africa than anywhere else in the world. Let that sink in.
@fcfortune points out that while we open up tourism, we should be issuing warnings to single women that is it dangerous for them to travel here. 5 times more dangerous than anywhere else in the world. Let that sink in.
During Women's month (which the biggest joke since the proposal of lifestyle audits for politicians) we are offered specials and discounts at spas, retail stores and restaurants. Because, I suppose, traditionally those are seen as 'things women like.'
This woman would like other things. She would like to go for a walk at night without fear. She would like to walk through a carpark without holding her keys in her fist as a weapon. She would like them so much more than a cut price hot stone massage.
She would like to make her decision on where to eat based on the restaurant and not how brightly lit the carpark is. Or who will be walking who to the car.
But we do not get offered help with these things. Reporting GBV is still a traumatic experience. Single mothers battle fruitlessly to get maintenance out of absent fathers and cannot, by law, recover those costs.
And I do not see any government push to change this. So please cancel Women's Day and month. It is offensive lip service. And you can dress it up in pink with flowers and pedicure discounts but actually it's just lipstick on a pig. Think on that.
