In 2017 it became increasingly clear that armed and costumed groups were clashing at protests. People on the left and right were engaged in violence and carrying guns. The right had far more firepower. This situation scared me.
Since then, we have seen the number of clashes - and the violence - escalate. Police and federal troops have responded very violently. The writing has been on the wall for some time that we could see shootings inside this civil unrest.
What we are seeing in Kenosha tonight is horrific, but it's not a surprise to anyone who has paid attention. All signs point to even more violence and civil unrest in the coming weeks. These are dangerous times.
There are people on both sides of the political spectrum who are engaged in violent, accelerationist tactics. I have seen it in multiple cities with my own eyes. Normally we might look to our leaders for calm but the president routinely inflames tensions.
We have clearly passed a tipping point into some very serious violence. The question isn't which way we're headed, but how far we go down the road.
