4 at the back with 3 premium defenders!

Here’s why I am starting the season with this structure and why you may also want to consider it!

Firstly, let’s see what such a defence would look like...
As seen below, Trent, Robbo and Doherty are examples of premium defenders with a 4.5 and a playing 4.0 completing the defence...
The benefits:
1/ Transfers
Due to the blanks to the Manchester clubs in GW1, everyone is trying to plan how to use their precious FT’s to get the assets from both clubs into their teams!

A defence like this is low maintenance and can be as permanent as you like, meaning that...
You won’t need to be wasting transfers on defenders when fixtures turn every 5-6 weeks...

The freedom of not having to put out any fires in defence will allow you to use your transfers aggressively to get in the early bandwagon picks that always appear in the opening weeks🔑
I feel this idea will also be more prevalent this year with the rise in popularity of “upside chasing” a strategy created by @lateriser12

This strategy has huge benefits but uses up a lot of your transfers... So if you’re planning on “upside chasing” saving transfers elsewhere
Will be golden, moreso than an extra million or two!
2/ The 4.5 conundrum
One of the main reasons I am currently opting for this structure is the lack of good defensive options at 4.5 million...

I really feel that filling your team with them weakens it immensely...
Furthermore, the cost of the 1.5-2.5 mill you spend upgrading your 4.5 defender is made look so small by the upgrade you receive!
3/ Reducing need for enablers:
I’m sure everyone has seen enough ASM, Armstrong and even Soucek comparisons and are fed up of having no option but to have them in their drafts!

Switching from a 3atb to a 4atb allows an upgrade from the likes of Armstrong to Doherty for as little
As 1 million...
The worth of the upgrade is worth considering seen as Doc outscored every midfielder under 6.5 (excluding Lundy) by 37 pts or more!

Your underwhelming enabler pick that returns 2 pts each week has just transformed into someone who can match anyone under 10 mill
4/ The third premium
Assuming that the first two premium defenders are from Liverpool, they won’t change much throughout the season...

However, you can be more creative with the third spot!

With the 5.5- 6 mill price range full of great defensive options...
(Doherty, Ricardo, Digne, Walker, Tierney, Cancelo) there’s an opportunity to switch every 7-8 GWs to the player with the best fixtures, meaning you can maximise the points output of the position...

It’s still only using up 2-4 transfers a season but could be so effective!
5/ Points!
The most obvious but exciting part of this strategy!
Your 3 premiums with a few well timed transfers in the third position can easily return 600 points for the season 🔥

Whatever the 4.5 and 4.0 rotation can offer on top is bonus as it gives balance to the team!
The simple fact is that almost no combination of midfielders and attackers can return 600 points from 3 players using a budget of max. 21 million!

Having such expensive defenders also surprisingly doesn’t restrict spending in midfield and attack as much as you’d think...
It still leaves funds for 2 premium mids (captaincy options) and allows for a somewhat surprisingly balanced finish to the rest of the team!
In conclusion, I am pretty certain I will start GW1 with this structure!

Everyone has different ways of playing the game but if you are interested by some of the points I have described, it may be worth trying out a draft with 4 atb and extra money in defence!
