Good morning, I’m Justine and I work as a legal adviser at HMCTS. Today I’ll be giving you a glimpse into my working life, offering an insight into what my role involves & the part I play in the justice system. #SpotlightSessions
As a legal adviser my main duties include giving legal advice to magistrates to help them with their decisions & ensuring they are legally sound. I ensure cases are prioritised to make the best use of the court's time & that cases are dealt with promptly. #SpotlightSessions
On a typical day, I travel to whichever court I’m required at in my area & go through court case lists with the magistrates and will notify them of any changes in the law or recent updates. #SpotlightSessions (1/2)
I also work closely with @cpsuk and @HMPPS Probation Service to prepare for court sessions. This collaboration is a key aspect in ensuring that the justice system functions as effectively as it should. #SpotlightSessions (2/2)
Before the morning’s trials get underway, I review the daily listings, identify the defendant and assist with pleas. I am also responsible for resulting cases in real-time, which involves recording the magistrates’ decisions and sentences. #SpotlightSessions (1/2)
If a defendant is on conditional bail, we are also responsible for recording the bail conditions and, if necessary, printing a copy of the bail notice and handing this to the defendant. #SpotlightSessions (2/2)
