On the night before my "actual" last first Fall semester, I want to share that over the past few weekends, I provided trainings to all ESC Engineering clubs at Cal about DE&I to remove their application/interview process (thread)
Starting school at Berkeley, I had no clue that once I did the HARD work of getting into the school, I would have to go through an EXTRA application process to participate in clubs on campus. I remember feeling hopeless,
watching the people who were a part of the many clubs get internships & have resources/opportunities that seemed so inaccessible to me. And I wasn& #39;t the only one. After joining @hes_ucberkeley I realized that there were communities on campus that cared for me. The difference was
that HES and another club, B.E.S.S.A. ( http://www.ucberkeleybessa.com/ ),">https://www.ucberkeleybessa.com/">... were based on DE&I values (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion). The journey of viewing these problems with clubs as systemic made me change the way I viewed everything at Berkeley.
And while I was/am happy to be able to help Latinx/Black folks by empowering them, I realized that if the other clubs didn& #39;t change, then the systemic issue wouldn& #39;t go away either.
I found myself in a position these past few weekends where I asked hard, but necessary questions to clubs.
Example of one slide that has stuck with me:
*To the participants via zoom*
"Without looking at any outside resources, write the top 3 values of your club in 1 minute on the chat"
*People look around, 1 minute goes by and a few people have answered on the chat*
"Next question, how many of your clubs came out with a Black Lives Matter statement or donated to an org around June?"
*I& #39;ve asked participants to use the & #39;react& #39; feature, and many of them click on the button*
"Next question, how many of your clubs have Black members?"
Y& #39;all can already guess how many clubs & #39;reacted& #39; (to be clear, very few people reacted in a zoom call of over 50 participants, where 1-2 participants represented 1 club. Y& #39;ALL, one club = >30 students.
This has become a long thread, but IN CONCLUSION I did not think that I& #39;d come to see the day when clubs were making the steps to remove their (exclusionary) application processes, & I& #39;m really grateful to know that I provided some of the work to make this become possible https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="✨" title="Funken" aria-label="Emoji: Funken">
