1. Just had a good chat (through our respective masks) to the manager of the Point Chev fruit shop. He reckons this lockdown has been a lot better than the last for them. Not as much panic, he reckons. I'm sure it helps that the whole strip he's in is trading in some fashion.
2. The little table out front is the retail icon of the time. Mostly, it's not actual click-and-collect, but customers standing back and ordering then stepping forward to pick up. Everyone seemed to immediately work out they could do this and I think it's a reasonable compromise.
3. The supermarkets have been much more chill too – the staff have done this before, no one's panic-buying and I haven't seen an empty shelf. Countdown finally has QR codes. It would be good if everyone was wearing masks, but a lot of people are, usually 75% at my locals.
4. This might seem hard to square with the Rutherford analysis of social media sentiment on the front page of the Herald today, which is all anger, and anxiety and being "over it". But that's measuring social media, not people going about their business in the real world.
5. It's currently a fury of politics, conflict and conspiracy theories, with an election campaign running underneath it – and I don't think it's very good for our collective mental health. Conventional media hasn't been a whole lot better. It's anxiogenic af.
6. This is not to downplay the predicament of businesses that can't trade & people who don't get paid if they can't work. It's going to be hard for the likes of hospo owners and taxi/Uber drivers even after we go to Level 2. I worry a lot for my friends in performance and events.
7. But I think people outside Auckland would be surprised at how much the city is continuing to function in Level 3. On a practical level, it's *both* "oh god, this again" and "we know the drill".
8. Finally, let our thoughts be with the people who are sick, in hospital, in ICU, and their families. They're at the sharp end of this and some are being demonised for it. A little more attention to them and a little less to professional talking heads would not be a bad thing.
