Champaign County has eighty six new cases today. "This is students, not community spread." "We're testing lots so we totes have it under control." "Our positivity rate is so low."
But our testing is still JUST FOR UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS FACULTY STAFF AND STUDENTS. The literally HUNDREDS of cases that appeared in our small community over the last week went to grocery stores, bars, restaurants.
They are quarantined now, but how many did they infect beforehand? How many entire families are about to get sick? How many will develop lifelong health problems?
There are people walking around in our community today who will be dead in a few months because we brought tens of thousands of people to our small towns.
Was the irreparable loss of our trust worth it? Was it worth the costs of my friends who are grocery baggers, corrections officers, TSA agents, housecleaners, health officials, stylists, aestheticians, farmers, bartenders?
My friends and neighbors DON'T have access to twice weekly rapid walk-up testing. Hell, my own two children don't have access and I'm employed there.
How much spread in the community will cause you to shut down? What's the exact number of harmed human lives you have decided to tolerate to stay economically viable and not draw from your $2.35 billion dollar endowment?
How much of the blame will you put on the students, and not the lie you sold them about their college experience?
