The Oakland Athletics : Create a "Glenn Burke Day" at the Oakland A's to honor a Black LGBTQ+ sports icon - Sign the Petition! http://chng.it/KffzW8nS  via @Change
Do you know #GlennBurke? Here's why you should:
#GlennBurke invented the high-five with Dusty Baker on October 2, 1977 as a baseball player on the Los Angeles Dodgers. 🙌🏿

Think about all the iconic sports moments we would not have if not for the high-five!
#GlennBurke was the first athlete of a major American sport to come out as gay. He is the first openly gay MLB player.âšŸïžđŸŒˆ
#GlennBurke grew up on 62nd Street on the border of Berkeley and Oakland, attending Berkeley High and played for the Oakland Athletics for two seasons. 🌳
To honor, elevate, and celebrate his story, let’s institute a “Glenn Burke Day” on the 2021 Oakland @Athletics gameday schedule and beyond.
Not only will this help change the culture of homophobia in the MLB and sports, but we can use this opportunity to highlight a Black-founded organization, the Oakland LGBTQ Community Center.
UPDATE: over 430 supporters in 4 days! I’m so humbled by the support and encouragement from A’s fans, Bay Area natives, LGBTQ advocates, and sports enthusiasts alike. Let’s keep it going. #GlennBurke
Although baseball isn’t my favorite sport, it’s always been a part of my life. My Granmargie worked for the Atlanta Braves in her retirement for 20 years because she loved the game so much. I wanted to honor her memory + elevate the voice of a queer Black athlete I see myself in
Right now, we’d like to keep the momentum going and get as many signatures as possible as we gain the attention of the A’s organization.

Here’s how you can help:
Can you forward this petition to 3 friends who’d be interested in signing?
