why education is important during this time. thread

tw// slurs, recent twt drama
* i am not defending dream
i’m not sure if geography has anything to do with this, but i live in south florida. down here, slurs are very popular to use and are present in everyone’s vocabulary. in fact, a lot of slurs were taught to me at a young age by adults and i was told that they were okay to use,+
that they were just synonyms for other words. for example, the r slur, the d slur, the f slur, etc. i’ve grown up surrounded by people using these slurs and they became a part of my vocabulary too, however there were some slurs that i did not use (such as the n word & the f slur)
as i recognized them as offensive. unfortunately, at the time, i did not recognize some slurs such as the r slur as offensive. and nobody ever told me it was. until i found a thread on the internet explaining why the r slur was offensive and the history behind it. and i will+
admit, at first i did not quite understand. it was such a overly used word in my community that i could not comprehend how it could hurt someone, as the word was tossed around in daily conversations every day where i’m from. but as i looked in to it more, i realized that the word
has been used as a derogatory term against the nuerodivergent community for years on end, and i’ve been using it to call my friends dumb when they did something stupid. i felt terrible. i immediately tried to remove the word from my vocabulary, which is a very hard thing to do
considering i literally grew up using the word. but i did, it’s not a word i use anymore, along with other slurs that were a part of my vocabulary as well. and i’ve began educating people on why they shouldn’t use this word since. i am so happy that we live in a time where we can
educate through a large scale on the internet. and i am so happy that i was educated on the slur. and i am happy to say it is not a part of my vocabulary anymore. why? because i was educated. i was told that it was wrong.
the only thing we can do right now is educate. harrassing, sending death threats, etc. will not help. we also must not assume, dream’s views on the slur may have changed. do not send hate.
education is so important. we are so lucky to live in an age where information can be found at our fingertips. we are so lucky to live in an age where we can spread information to a large scale at a fast pace. use this power for good. continue educating. continue doing good.
i would like to apologize if i have offended or disappointed anyone with this thread. i cannot defend myself. all i can say is that it’s in the past and i simply did not know. however i was educated and i made the effort to change, and i think at the end of the day,
that’s what matters. thank you if you read all this. please continue educating respectfully. i love you all. i am going to go log off for a while. :)
