Thread!

So I've had a look at the €1.8m allocated to Co. Kildare of the €55m announced by @EamonRyan for "cycleways, footpaths, bus shelters, bike parks". It's concerning, and relevant not just for Kildare people. 1/8 https://twitter.com/EamonRyan/status/1297115738143100928?s=20
The PfG promises that 20% of the transport budget will be for walking and cycling. This document though highlights concerns I have that local authorities will 1. try and use it for other purposes and 2. will use it for projects that will have limited/no benefit. 2/8
€325k (18% of the total) has been allocated to projects where improving driving is the priority, rather than active travel. The only Naas project is a prime example. They will "Resurface Monread avenue, remark the cycling lane, improve the ramps and upgrade cycle signage."3/8
Or this beaut from Leixlip/Celbridge "Resurfacing and relining of roads/streets (replacement road markings should consider cycling arrangements). €50,000" 4/8
Cycling only gets €15k (1%) on its own, with most being joint walking and cycling projects (€385k, 21%). Nearly all the cycling spending is on painted lanes, not actual segregated cycle lanes. The only time a segregated lane is mentioned they only hope it will happen. 5/8
This example from Maynooth (in a school area) shows that KCC think that painted cycle lanes will help by alerting "motorists to the presence of cyclists on the road". i.e. they a bit of paint will now encourage parents to allow their kids cycle to school! 6/8
When it comes to allocating funding for active travel it can't be for token projects where money gets spent but is of no real benefit, such as painting cycle lanes. County councils need to up their game when it comes to using the funding that will be coming their way. 7/8
