@/tom_fowdy is a British columnist specialized in "NK & China analysis", with a big platform of 23k followers. Recently he has shown predatory behavior towards several women, particularly Asian women it seems, including at least one minor, a 16 years old girl.

In this thread, we will look at the messages he sent to this girl, and make it a case study of what an attempt at grooming can look like.
This entire thread was written in cooperation with her.

In the very first message, right off the bat he seems to understand the power imbalance at play. Calling himself intimidating and creepy is already a red flag, people usually see themselves as creepy when they have the intention to be a creep.

He tells her that her story is “absolutely incredible and unique”, going strong with the compliments and trying hard to appear nice. He really seems to have a thing for "exotic" ethnicities , evidenced further by the amount of young Asian women he follows, and messaged.

When he finds out that she is a minor, he calls himself creepy again. If you feel creepy around minors, you are probably a creep, and should stop talking to them. He of course, does not do that, but acknowledges the power imbalance once again, and keeps going.

His other comments are eerily similar to "you& #39;re so mature for your age", an all-time favorite of groomers.

Offering her journalistic opportunities in his own company could be seen as just a kind gesture, maybe a little too kind for a person he has never talked to before, but as we will see in a moment, there are more instances of him offering “kind” gestures.

This behavior is usually a way for groomers to assert dominance, to remind their victim of their power and influence, but also to make them feel indebted. By being so nice, the victim feels like they owe them something. Keep this in mind because it will be important.

He is now getting more personal, asking her questions about her sexuality that he should have no business asking, especially to a minor, along with a strange comment about how he assumed she is LGBTQ.

Very out of place but will be somewhat relevant later. It could be a way to appear less scary by painting himself as tolerant and open minded.

This is the second time he comments on her age, and saying how she is smart for being so young, another case of “you’re mature for your age”.

We are now getting into dangerous territory, as he tells her that his adult "friend" thought she was attractive and that same adult friend wanted to add her to a group chat for nudes, even acknowledging that she is 16 in the same sentence.

(The latter comment was made in regards to a tweet she had made about body shaming)

It is a highly inappropriate thing to tell a minor, showing that he sees her in a sexualized context, and was possibly hoping that she would ask to be added to this group.

He then messaged her a month later out of the blue in regards to another tweet she made about working out, showing he is consistent in trying to start random conversations.

This is the second instance of him offering to do something for her: he offers to write her college recommendations. As we& #39;ve seen before, it& #39;s weird considering he barely knows her, and that behavior is generally manipulative.

Lastly, he asks her for her birthday, to send her a gift. That& #39;s a third "very nice thing" that he wants to do for her for no apparent reason. It also implies that he is going to ask her for her address. Another huge red flag, and not the kind communists should be waving.

Throughout this conversation, our generous columnist is showing clear patterns of manipulative behavior, profiting from his position of power as a grown man with a large platform and a lot of contacts.

He is desperately trying to get her to accept one of his poisoned gifts meant to trap her emotionally, and even sexualizing her, despite being fully aware that she is only 16.

We know of at least 3 other Asian women that he has also messaged and sometimes has been creepy with. We also know other women who were very recently followed for no apparent reason, given that they only have a few followers, and that their tweets are unrelated to politics.

It& #39;s fair to assume that it goes a lot deeper than this, as we know only a small fraction of the people he could have messaged. We invite everyone who has received weird messages from him to share their story, either publicly or though DMs.

And because this is a particularly large account, we would also like to ask everyone to share this as far as possible.
