Is Asha really comparing Gundu: fat (or gunda: dirty) to Nikki? I wonder why someone doesn't go by the nickname fat?
Between the Kamala pick and the Haley speech I'm enjoying the brief period of my life where my broken hindi is coming in handy
Haley writes about this in her book. Before accusing someone of basically being a race traitor you might wanna use Google it?
And maybe scrub your own Yale lecturer page...
There is a very retrograde and reactionary trend among some people in the subcontinent of shaming people for stepping outside their tribe/caste/religion/sect. What Asha is doing here is what you might imagine someone in the BJP or even the RSS do. It's very illiberal.
Nikki probably faced a lot of racism from within the Indian community for, for instance, marrying an American of European descent. I know because I've seen this a million times myself. She has an Indian name, it's Punjabi. She is allowed to be her own person...period.
This is the beauty of America. People can be who they want to be. In the old world everyone came to this country from, whether it be Europe, Asia, whatever, those tribes and castes bind you in a way they don't in America. Nikki Haley is free to be who she wants to be here.
This is why when you poll immigrants about America they tend to be more patriotic and optimistic than native-born people. They know what life is like elsewhere. This is why she doesn't think America is a "racist country," even if it has racism (as everywhere does)
Haley's argument was not that there is no racism in America. Her argument is that the country is not fundamentally racist because it is a work in progress that is consistently becoming "freer, fairer, and better for everyone."
