If you're confused and thinking "but why can't we make fun of this person", ask yourself why you even think that being poor or having a certain way of life due to poverty, is an insult.
This isn't about defending racists or whether poor whites in Appalachia are racist. The point, again, is that by using those stereotypes as insults you are teaming up with the ruling class. You think you're aiming at the racist but you're not, you're aiming at the other group.
