Movies that feature the afterlife (a thread):
First up is “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” (1941). Is laugh out loud funny in places. Has a LOT of exposition, and Joe Pendleton exceeds his daily allowance of the phrase “in the pink” at least fours times over. Still highly recommend it!
Next is “Cabin in the Sky” (1943). A very fun time with some great singing, especially from Petunia (Ethel Waters)!
“Heaven Can Wait” (1943) is next. Very colorful as I recall. The stand-out scene to me is the interaction between Mr. and Mrs. Strabel at the breakfast table (via their butler, Jasper) over the funny papers. (Just so happens to be on YouTube! https://youtu.be/tWwDiJrD3wo )">https://youtu.be/tWwDiJrD3...
“A Matter of Life and Death” (1946) is next. I liked the very beginning of this movie. Recognized Roger Livesey (Colonel Blimp) and Marius Gohring (The Red Shoes). It was all right! I liked it a little less than the other Powell & Pressburger films I mentioned in this tweet.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)’s representation of the afterlife is pretty funny to me. My favorite part is when the angels are in counsel and they call Clarence over and his little star just pulls up alongside the others https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😆" title="Lächelndes Gesicht mit geöffnetem Mund und fest verschlossenen Augen" aria-label="Emoji: Lächelndes Gesicht mit geöffnetem Mund und fest verschlossenen Augen"> https://youtu.be/79pIurpNARs ">https://youtu.be/79pIurpNA...
Next is “Down to Earth” (1947), a sequel of sorts to “Here Comes Mr. Jordan”, starring Rita Hayworth. It’s a weird story idea (the goddess of dance goes down to earth? As a SEQUEL to HCMJ??), and I didn’t really care for it...
“Carousel” (1956) is next. I think the sets are colorful and fun, though the plot is sad. Many of the songs are great (“If I Loved You”... my dad has a Pandora station based on that song). “Soliloquy” is memorable, and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is beautiful.
Jumping to 1991 “Defending Your Life” is next. One of Albert Brooks’ best, and it’s one of the films where you mentally put yourself in that world to see how you would measure up!
Oof. 1997 brought “Toothless”, starring Kirstie Alley. When I was a kid I thought it was a good movie, but alas, I was blinded by the crown and fairy dress. Watched it last year (it’s on YouTube!), and it is not a good movie https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😅" title="Lächelndes Gesicht mit offenem Mund und Angstschweiß" aria-label="Emoji: Lächelndes Gesicht mit offenem Mund und Angstschweiß">

(It features a “hell-a-vator” for goodness sakes!)
Lastly, why not, we have 2017’s film “Coco”. It’s cute, visually stylish, has good songs, predictable story beats, but is nice! No real complaints except the ending double-whammy of emotional tear jerker scenes back-to-back (saying goodbye to Héctor and singing to Grandma Coco.)
I know there are some remakes of films mentioned in this thread and some animated ones I missed (“Book of Life”, “All Dogs Go to Heaven”, etc.) Feel free to comment or share others you’ve seen!
