everyone says damon won't let elena make her own decisions but that's not true, it's only in cases of life or death that's when he gets in. in this scene she decided to stay away from him and he didn't press her, he accepted her decision even if he was tearing him apart.

another selfless thing. after elena erased every good damon memory he decided to let her be happy and not pressure her to remember, even though she wanted to remember.

elena erased all of damon's good memories and yet he showed her that thanks to her he was a different person and she fell in love again.

no one mentions this but damon spent 5 years of his life being imprisoned, tortured, watching his organs ripped out and letting them regenerate to hurt him again, and he never told anyone this. damon's hatred by humans makes sense when you see these scenes.

he didn't even mind having to die to save his best friend. as you can call this man selfish when he's so selfless and it's not the first scene where hes put his own life at risk so others don't get hurt.

damon doesn't hesitate for a single second to surrender his life to keep elena safe.

damon was dissected for 3 years, locked in the coffin next to elena just because he believed it was a problem for his friends and brother and wanted them to stop worrying and sacrifice for him. he just wanted to take care of his loved ones.

damon was literally willing to kill himself, give his soul to the devil and go straight to hell just to save elena and her loved ones.

bc of the traumas that caused him to be inside the fenix stone, damon believed that he had killed elena and bc of that he deserved to go to hell. even he was going to let julian kill him, and no one helped him, he had to go through all that guilt and despair alone.
