Trump speaking on the virtues of single family zoning has helped me in educating others on why SFZ is a racist practice that we need to abolish. I'm seeing a lot of other YIMBYs point out his arguments as being racist as well. (Which they are)
Trump's arguments that I'm seeing some people tote as proof that they on "the right side" does not excuse past or present problematic approaches in addressing and communicating with Black/POC communities on housing
The housing space is overwhelming dominated by White voices that have yet to be held accountable for their past or current actions. As an organizer that has worked predominantly in communities of color, previous YIMBY attitudes have made it incredibly difficult for me to outreach
It has literally taken our racist President to speak on housing for me to build bridges that I thought were all but burned. The YIMBY community as a whole in their actions did not do that. The President did.
I've been called racial slurs by White people in the housing space. I've been rather aggressively attacked by White women. And now I see people tote the President's arguments as to why they are on "the right side"
YIMBYs need to do better and be better in calling out problematic behavior. Toting the President's arguments is not enough.
