Been noticing some thoughts sprouting up around regarding Eternal& #39;s story and I wanted to share my two cents; characters such as Valen (The Betrayer) weren& #39;t underutilized in the story, he served his purpose and that was the end of it. If this weren& #39;t DOOM I& #39;d agree--
But it is and it& #39;s important to remember that the story has & never should be the primary focus. In DOOM you are here to kill demons as the Doom Slayer, the plot is there to bring you from point A to point B while the lore adds context for those who want it.
Hayden & Vega are exceptions as they usually don& #39;t halt gameplay flow and can help add context to an area, i.e., Samuel Hayden& #39;s dialogue all throughout Nekravol Part 1 & 2. Most importantly, neither of these two take time away from what& #39;s important, you.
A lot of us believed the Marauder was going to be a singular entity that appeared throughout Eternal& #39;s story. That turned out to not be the case and despite disappointing some, he still served his purpose of being the player& #39;s rival.
Narratively, if you were interested enough to learn more & read the Codex, you& #39;d find that the Marauders do add weight to the bigger picture. They were the byproduct of the Night Sentinel civil war, a war that was inevitable due of the Slayer& #39;s ramblings of demons.
