The name of a victim becomes known.

Then, this name is shared to humanize the victim. But, quickly, the name itself is just used to signify.

Tweets like

VICTIM NAME
VICTIM NAME
VICTIM NAME

appear.

Satiation has begun.

The name dehumanizes and becomes more of an idea.
Then.

The undertow of the internet pulls all ideas towards memefication.

This is because a meme represents the shortest amount of time an idea can be efficiently expressed on social media.
The unfortunate part is that I believe people mean well.

I just think there should be more dialogue around the process through which a victim becomes an exploitable slogan.

And it begins at the moment a name is treated like Bart Simpson’s chalkboard or a new fashion line.
From where comes the desire to make a victim’s name typographically appealing?

It’s a well-intentioned urge to make the name visually engaging.

But, an inevitable thing happens when you treat a victim’s name like a tag line for a movie.
Once the name has undergone symbolization, it can now become a vehicle for corporate interests.

For example, a company with discriminatory hiring practices and no diverse leadership, can now easily say, without blinking,

💫Because Everyone Deserves To Dream 💫
These Ampersand shirts, as they are called, derive from Experimental JetSet’s Beatles shirt.

And it is critical to know why the shirts were so appealing.

They were attempting to create an abstraction.

A self-referential band shirt. https://twitter.com/just_jdreaming/status/1298328341406027777
It’s complicated and, again, not trying to blame well-intentioned people.

But, we need to more slowly think about the reflex to take a picture of a person brutally murdered by the state.

And create a Miyazaki-esque abstraction of their image.
There is something already grammatically absurd about repeating any word over and over.

SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON
SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON SPOON

It is a short bridge for people to then see who can become more absurd in their repetition. https://twitter.com/wembleyleach/status/1298358274446819328
