Starting a spooky movie master thread to keep track of all the horror/thriller films I watch leading up to Halloween (and maybe beyond) 👇
The Conjuring (2013): 11/10, one of my favorite horror movies. Classic haunting style story line, and the intro to one of my favorite horror film franchises.
The Conjuring 2 (2016): 9/10, still an excellent movie and a great follow up to the first film. The twist is fun, cause it's a haunting within a haunting!
The Nun (2018): 6/10. This is a follow up to The Conjuring 2 and brings back the Nun/Valak demon. The origin story is cool and this movie is *pretty*, but some of the writing is sort of silly. 10/10 for Taissa Farmiga tho, love her in basically anything.
Insidious (2010): 7/10. OK, yes, I admit it, I'm a huge James Wan/Leigh Whannel fan. This one doesn't quite hold up over time as much tho. Definitely more tense/unnerving than frightening. And I feel like the creature design on the main demon could have been better.
Insidious 2 (2013): 7.5/10. I guess Patrick Wilson only makes horror movies? This came out the same year as The Conjuring! Similar to the first film, more tense than frightening. But I think I actually liked this one a little more! Story was more interesting IMO.
Insidious 2 (continued): Also interesting that they totally drop the demon angle in this one. It's much more of a haunting thing and antagonist entities have ties to IRL crimes/badness, where the first one was basically like "IDK this demon likes your weird kid for some reason".
Insidious 3 (2015): 6/10. This one is tough to rate. It gets extra points for better body horror and for the entire series becoming The Elise Show. But it loses points for not following up on the cliff-hanger from the last film and being a somewhat clumsy prequel.
Insidious: The Last Key: 4/10. Honestly disappointed. I love Elise as a character but I'm not here for films that cheapen and minimise abuse by attributing it to other worldly forces. Real people suffer from real abuse at the hands of humans every day. Don't blame the demons.
Sinister (2012): 9/10. All I have to say about this one is that I think Ethan Hawke is under appreciated, and children are terrifying.
Creep (2014): 10/10. HOLY SHIT. I don't scare easily but I definitely feel like this might give me nightmares. I love the skill it takes to do something so simple in concept so effectively. Not to mention I appreciate the total lack of ghosts and ghouls.
Creep 2 (2017): 11/10. This one has a lot more going on, in a way, and has a few more characters. But it still has a lot of the elements I loved about the first one, and I really liked Sara as a main protagonist. And they set it up for potentially another sequel đź‘€
