I am fascinated to see how many of us evangelicals have been so conditioned by leaders who misappropriate grace and forgiveness that they don't even have to actively gaslight us. We do it to each other and ourselves, instinctively.
Jerry Falwell needs no defenders right now. He's unrepentant, belligerent, and actively harming the church and besmirching the name of Christ. We should be outraged that he's been allowed to be a (the?) face of Evangelicalism for so long. We should be glad when he's gone.
We're not pleased to discover his sin. But his sin and character has been exposed for a long time. What's happening now is that he's finally being held to account for it. And for that, we should be grateful.

Pray for his soul, but the man needs to be handed over to the devil.
... hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord. (1 Cor 5:5 - a situation that has very close parallels)
