Dear Twitter Scientists, I am a high school biology teacher in southern Wisconsin and I work in a school with a high percentage of students that fall near or below the poverty line. In addition, my classes are diverse.
This year, I am making a strong effort to help my students identify themselves in other scientists this year. Though I can teach my students how to be critical thinkers, I realize not all students will recognize themselves in me. (2/5)
However, I don't want that to get in the way of engaging students in biology. So, I am looking for people of all backgrounds across the world who are willing to be those potential "role models" for my students. I want them to be able to see themselves in someone. (3/5)
I am looking for scientists who have come (or are in) different socioeconomic backgrounds, members of the LGBTQ+ community, underrepresented in the sciences, literally, anyone who thinks they have a story worth telling who are willing to share it with my students (4/5)
If you are willing to help, please respond to this thread or DM me. If you wouldn't mind, please share with your networks. I don't have the network to do this on my own. Thank you for your help, Twitter. #stemdiversity #diversityinscience #WomenInSTEM #LGBTinSTEM (5/5)
To all who have shared this message and tried to DM me, I admit my settings were wrong (smh). But, I've opened them for anyone to now DM me. Right now, I'm looking for email addresses for those willing to help and I will send you more information by email hopefully tonight.
All right, I have now created a survey to organize information. It is not because I don't want to hear your stories (I do), but because this may be a way for me to step away from my computer and spend some time with family. https://forms.gle/xyCUZLGCWkV6BMqk7
